Black Travel Summit met with Romie Williams, founder of Roaming with Romie on April 19th to find out a little bit more about what she does, her thoughts on the impacts of Social Media, and travel tips on budgeting and traveling solo as a woman of color!

What is some advice others with a day-job, but, wish to travel as much as you do?
I think that leveraging time is the biggest tip for traveling. Leveraging every holiday, weekend, and paid time off is necessary! I often look at the school calendar, at the beginning of the year, and will designate my PTO accordingly. It’s also about strategizing with where you go…
Do you feel as though Social Media has an impact on Black Travel?
I think that Social Media has a lot of positive effects on travel, especially with African Diaspora communities. Traditionally we are not well-represented in various industries, travel being one. I think that Social Media has created a platform to leverage folks from the African Diaspora traveling across the world. Simply seeing someone who looks like you traveling, inspires people to travel if they had been fearful... On the flipside, I feel as though Social Media may have caused feelings of ineptitude among some members of the African Diaspora…
Can we prevent these feelings of self-consciousness?
It comes from a practice of thought. The brain is a muscle and just like every other muscle in your body, you can train your brain. That’s something we don’t hear a lot, is how to train your brain to control your thoughts. Your thoughts ultimately becomes your reality. If you’re thinking that you’re not as beautiful as someone else, that is what you will see when you scroll down on your feed. We can’t always control what we’re exposed to, but, it’s about interpretation…
