The Black Travel Summit

The Black Travel Summit (BTS) hosts year-round events celebrating and educating the tourism industry on Black travel professionals, entrepreneurs, and travelers.

To-date, BTS has conducted two webinars, 35+ micro virtual events, a global summit and brought together almost 200 of the Black travel industry’s most renowned experts, influencers and partners to exchange and generate ideas about collaborating and expanding Black involvement in tourism. We’ve also seen more than 9,000 attendees to-date!

On October 20-22, 2023, participants from around the world are called to gather in beautiful Miami to explore everything travel from the Black perspective. We also aspire to bring tourism to Miami, not just for the beaches, but for its rich Black heritage, entrepreneurship, and history dating back to the 1800s.

Why we need a Black Travel Summit

According to MMGY and Mandala Research, the economic value of Black travelers in 2019 had grown over 51%, compared to the previous year, to $129.6 billion being spent on domestic and international leisure travel by U.S. travelers, and $29.9 billion being spent by Black travelers from the UK/Ireland, Germany, Canada and France. This makes the Black spending power critical to the tourism industry (Mandala Research Report & MMGY Global’s 2020 The Black Traveler: Insights, Opportunities and Priorities Report).

According to the United States Travel Association (USTA), Black Americans are the number one fastest growing segment in the travel industry. Black Americans represent the largest minority group in the United States comprising of 14% or 42 million of the total USA population.

An increase in income and education, the rise of social media, and a generation of tech-savvy millennials, are all coming together to create what’s being called the ‘Black Travel Movement.’

With the increased popularity of Black travel clubs and networks, Black American ‘baby boomers,’ with more time and money, are exploring the world in a way they were never able to before, while for millennials of color, travel is being considered somewhat of a rite of passage.

According to the Mandala Research Firm, 17% of Black Americans take one or more international trips and travel locally more than six times per year. 42% of Black Americans said they would spend more in 2020 on travel than 2019 (pre-Covid), and 50% of Black adults (16% more than the general population) are more likely to travel to locations associated with their ethnic or cultural heritage.

While only 11% of online bloggers are Black/African American, that number is rapidly increasing with the boom of the Black Travel Movement. Names like Martinique Lewis, Oneika Raymond, and Jessica Nabongo are ringing ears worldwide now and not just in the Black community.
